A New Diagnostic Unit

A new diagnostic unit for Men's Health concerns should be fitted out and equipped. It would have three main roles.

Health Promotion

We envisage building a flagship unit at Belfast City Hospital to allow open access to men to discuss their health care concerns and to have access to information about their health needs. The Health Promotion Agency would play an important role in setting this service up. We also envisage funding a nurse led health promotion service with links in the community, i.e. workplace, bars, clubs etc.

Early Diagnosis

Blood in the urine is a leading sign of possible urological pathology and can be detected by a simple urine test. There is currently great public interest in prostate cancer and early prostate cancer is curable. Too many men fail to seek medical help until the disease is advanced. We recognise that many men with early symptoms of prostate trouble ignore them and so we need to run a health awareness programme with the availability of PSA testing for men with symptoms. This not a screening programme but rather case finding.

Disease Prevention

Lifestyle:- diet, smoking, lack of exercise etc. remain a major cause of men's health problems. Men will have access to information regarding diet and exercise and health awareness.
